Pyrrhonism: How the Ancient Greeks Reinvented Buddhism

Pyrrhonism: How the Ancient Greeks Reinvented Buddhism by Adrian Kuzminski
Lexington Books | 2010 | ISBN: 0739125079 | Pages: 170 | PDF | Size: 2 MB

Adrian Kuzminski argues that Pyrrhonism, an ancient Greek philosophy, can best be understood as a Western form of Buddhism. Not only is its founder, Pyrrho, reported to have traveled to India and been influenced by contacts with Indian sages, but a close comparison of ancient Buddhist and Pyrrhonian texts suggests a common philosophical practice, seeking liberation through suspension of judgment with regard to beliefs about non-evident things.

Encyclopedia of Occultism and Parapsychology
Publisher: Thomson Gale | ISBN: 0810385708 | edition 2000 | PDF | 1939 pages | 10,9 mb

This fifth edition of the Encyclopedia of Occultism & Parapsychology (EOP) continues the tradition established by its predecessors in providing the most comprehensive coverage of the fields of occultism and parapsychology. The first edition, published in 1978, brought together the texts of two of the standard reference works in the field, Lewis Spence’s Encyclopedia of Occultism (1920) and Nandor Fodor’s Encyclopedia of Psychic Science (1934). Later, editor
Leslie Shepard took on the task of updating their observations and supplementing the volume with new entries.
The production of this massively ambitious work was sparked by a heightened interest in psychic phenomena, the occult, witchcraft, and related topics in the 1970s. This interest, which led directly to the New Age movement of the 1980s, provided a continued wealth of material for parapsychologists to examine. It also led to a reaction by a group of debunkers to form the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of the Claims of the Paranormal. This group believed that they were spokesmen for the scientific establishment.

Encyclopedia of Buddhism
Publisher: Gacl | ISBN: 0028657187 | edition 2003 | PDF | 1042 pages | 25,5 mb

Buddhism, according to the editor in chief of this encyclopedia, "is one of the three major world religions, along with Christianity and Islam." Unlike the other two, however, Buddhism lacks substantial reference works in Western languages. The majority are single-volume works, defining terms, concepts, deities, etc. The Encyclopedia of Buddhism, on the other hand, "seeks to document the range and depth of the Buddhist tradition in its many manifestations."

Worldmark Encyclopedia of Religious Practices Volume 2 Countries A–L
Publisher: Gacl | ISBN: 0787666114 | edition 2005 | PDF | 638 pages | 31,2 mb

In 2001 Thomson Gale had a simple but ambitious goal: to produce an encyclopedia outlining the contemporary religious practices of every country in the world—from the very largest, such as China, India, Brazil, and Russia, to the smallest, such as Tuvalu, Andorra, and Antigua and Barbuda. Because this information has not been readily available in books or other sources in libraries, as well as on the Internet, the project required years of planning and hard work by a large group of people: our distinguished board of 10 advisers, the 245 scholars and other subject specialists commissioned to write essays or to review the text of their colleagues, and the editorial staff of Thomson Gale. The result was this publication, the Worldmark Encyclopedia of Religious Practices. It joins an already existing series of Worldmark encyclopedias, including the Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations and the Worldmark Encyclopedia of Cultures and Daily Life.
